PrimalTap 5. Dual retro delay modeled with distorted freeze pitch to lo-fi loops and delay.
Are you looking for a studio delay full of characters from '80s or a performance tool that responds to mind-blowing knob tweaking, PrimalTap is a must!
PrimalTap is an emulation and re-imagination of the unique sound and delay features of Prime Time, a classic digital delay with some powerful sound design and performance features. Like the original hardware, PrimalTap is a hybrid of digital and analog sound - it delivers a surprising amount of grit, vibrancy and character to digital delay. In true Soundtoys style, we've also evolved and improved some of the unique features of the original hardware to give you even more control and creative possibilities.
Multiply
In PrimalTap, the Multiply control doubles the delay time and splits the sample rate at each turn of the knob. This is an emulation of the old Prime Time u nits - in the early 1980s, the memory needed for the delay circuit was very expensive, so the designers deftly allowed you to choose longer delay times at the expense of audio quality.
But this limitation turned out to be one of the effect's greatest creative features. You can dial in bold lo-fi echoes or, if you're looking for something more unconventional, try rotating or automating the knob while the audio is playing and you'll create some really unusual pitch jumps. Combine this with PrimalTap's VCO modulation, and you'll have some really wild sounds on your hands.
Modulate /p>
Like the original hardware, PrimalTap includes a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) that lets you add variation and motion to your echoes. Use it to create lush chorus effects, ribbon-like flanges and changing echoes smoothly in tone. It's perfect for tuning that s great shimmering guitar sounds from the 80s or to create wilder and more choppy modulations. Unlike the original, PrimalTap's rate control lets you raise the VCO in the audio frequency range, so you can even create effects of robotic ring modulation.
For more manual adjustments, hold down the Adjust button which allows you to manually sweep the VCO section for smooth and flawless distortion of the delayed signal. Try adjusting the Rate and controls Adjust and you'll find yourself creating raucous sci-fi sounds in no time. And of course, you can record or draw automation on your favorite DAW to capture and adjust all these weird modulation effects. PrimalTap really comes alive when you automate it!
Freeze
Ready to enter even stranger territory? Tap the Freeze button to grab a portion of the incoming audio . Basically the Freeze feature allows you to loop audio io, synced to time or duration of your choice. But the real madness starts when you start tweaking the time, freeze, and VCO settings - you can quickly warp and modulate an audio fragment into beautiful and beautiful soundscapes. weird.
Twist the time buttons to create zipper sweeps. Adjust the VCO controls for ray gun barrages. And dip down to an octave lower with the Multiply button. The Freeze is capable of producing some truly supernatural sounds when you start experimenting with PrimalTap's other controls.
History
The original Prime Time unit, initially released in 1978, was a favorite of some highly creative sonic pioneers like Daniel Lanois (who is still rocking his prime time today), Brian Eno, David Byrne, Pat Metheny and Peter Gabriel. Some creative users even started using it as a instrument, adjusting buttons and pressing buttons while to process live audio.
The unusual lo-fi and pitch-glitching effects were literally unique at the time. It came in stock with 128 millisecond delay and could be optionally upgraded to 256 (for a substantial fee). Like many classic pieces of audio equipment, over time, limitations or imperfections are often what creates the character people come to love. In this case of Prime Time, RAM was expensive, so in an attempt to get the most out of the minimum, the engineers created the multiply function to increase the delay time at the expense of sound quality. highly sought after sound, and that sound is what led us to create PrimalTap.
The New Direction
While PrimalTap faithfully emulates the original Prime Time, it doesn't we resisted bringing this classic unit into the 21st century by adding new features and enhancements:
Ken's Spin
I'm Always looking for quirky gear with unique personality and vibe. I recently watched YouTube videos of Daniel Lanois mixing live with Black Dub. It was so interesting and inspiring to see the way he used the H3000 and Prime Time in real-time while mixing - using Prime Time's hold button to capture ambient loops and the Multiply button to create octave shifts. smile on my face. It was so weird, cool and musical, that I knew this was the next thing I should work on. It took months of work to bring the same level of courage, character and musicality to this plug- in, but I think it was definitely worth it. It's my favorite Soundtoys plugin at the moment.
PrimalTap also includes Little PrimalTap, a simpler single delay line model. Make no mistake, it's not sloppy and can get used to echo, loop, warp, distort and mutilate in infinite ways. If you already own Little PrimalTap, check your account for updates to PrimalTap.
