New peak limiting intelligent mixer splits the audio spectrum into five bands
The key to the power of the L3 is the patent-pending PLMixer (Peak Limiting Mixer) mechanism. L3 differs from conventional broadband and multiband limiters in several ways. Unlike broadband limiters, the L3 first uses linear phase filters to divide the audio spectrum into five bands. PLMixer then uses psychoacoustic criteria to intelligently decide how much attenuation to apply to each band so that all available space is used. The result is that intermodulation is minimized and overall loudness is maximized, while brick wall limiting is still maintained - maintaining the simplicity of a single master limit control.
Unlike traditional multiband limiters, PLMixer does not require a bandwidth peak limiter to capture overages generated by individual bandwidth settings. Instead, PLMixer automatically controls the gain ratio between the bands.
User Controllable Priority Control lets you adjust the tonal character
L3 Priority Control allows the user controls the relative limit of each band. This unique control allows users to adjust the L3 tonal character over a wide range while maintaining the boundaries of the brick wall.
The 12dB boost or cut per band acts as a linear phase equalizer
p>The L3 allows a 12dB boost or cut in each band, beyond the limit applied to each band. In fact, this feature works just like a linear phase equalizer placed before the limiting section of the L3, making the L3 a complete final mastering tool. The L3 also features a linear phase crossover that does not introduce phase distortion between frequency bands. Crossover points are user selectable.
Individual controls allow emulation of classic limiters
Although PLMixer technology allows the L3 to be extraordinarily transparent, additional controls allow emulation the color and character of vintage limiters. The split control, for example, adjusts the independence of each band. When set to 0, the bands do not react separately and therefore L3 works - and sounds - like a bandwidth limiter. The Master Release changes the ARC (Adaptive Release Control) of the L3, offering warm, scaled, aggressive and manual tone options in addition to the default ARC setting. Rounding out the L3's feature set is the acclaimed Waves Wave Modeling and Noise section, which delivers the highest perceived quality of sound after quantizing.
