The Emotional Cello is a new type of virtual instrument, created by Harmonic Subtones, a team of developers in Munich, for the Kontakt 5 Player from Native Instrument. Because of its powerful yet exceptionally emotional sound, it unlocks previously unknown dimensions in the realms of sampling.

The Emotional Cello is the perfect instrument for film composing, pop production, songwriting, avant-garde classical and modern cello compositions. This unique virtual instrument shines through its impressive number of articulations, direct and colorless sound quality, unusual playing techniques and innovative rebound.

The emotional cello has always been recorded in a musical context to capture the natural bow and individual expressions of real instrumentalists. Thanks to intelligent scripts, 16 playing styles and real legato, this library offers loads of versatile applications. The emotional cello offers typical playing styles and articulations, as well as unusual techniques, such as

Subtones Harmonics calls the underlying philosophy of the Emello Cello project "Contextual Sampling". In search of perfect timbre and maximum inspiration, several string instruments were recorded over a period of no less than four years, realizing that nothing can match the natural vibrato with its artistic facets performed by skilled musicians. While any sample that includes recorded vibrato has obvious conceptual drawbacks, the sound of the performance itself will be far more inspiring than adding artificial vibrato. Based on this insight, Harmonic Subtones has been extracting the recordings with the best musicality to create a brilliant sounding instrument.

The result is a library of unrivaled authenticity.

In order to reach conclusive agreements, the Emotional Cello offers a multitude of articulations. In this way, the various phrases, curves, variations, pickups and endings can be used as real stand-alone phrases, without ever being repetitive. In order to properly match the various sounds and articulations to their musical context, the respective buttons with appropriate names, such as quick delicate, vivid or moderate, have been added.

In addition, Emotional Cello offers unusual and unconventional articulations that you won't find in most competitive products. For example:

and much more.

Technical enhancements have been added, such as the rewind function, which allows for controlled directional change of arc within a note using a key switch - highly useful for long supports. Likewise, vibrato-crossfade lets you create rhythmically seamless transitions from non-vibrato to vibrato-patches.

Recording

The emotional cello was recorded at Mastermix Studio, Unterföhring / Germany. The instrument was carefully placed in a room with wood panels, high ceilings and as far away from the wall as possible. Microphone recordings were intentionally performed at close range, using two Neumann models KM184 and U47, preserving a discreet part of the room's excellent acoustics. At the same time, the close microphone technique easily allows for external processing, for example to get a general ambience for the mix. Use Kontakt 5 Player's built-in convolution reverb or pure unprocessed original sounds as needed.

Kontakt-Instruments

Emotional offers three true master-patches: Normal, Sulponticello and Harmonics. They contain about 80% of all registered joints, which are logically interconnected using advanced scripts. For example: A note played at the beginning will sound perfectly natural, because the sample chosen will also be the first note of the source recordings. The same goes for legacy and sustained notes: all samples originate from a corresponding context of the original recordings.

Each of approximately 50 additional unique patches contains a selected articulation. Options range from simple support patches to dynamic crossfades between four layers. These patches are useful for producers who prefer to spread articulations over different MIDI tracks rather than switching between them via keys. For the highest authenticity and liveliness, the patches offer four rotation samples for long notes and up to eight for short notes.
