Baby Audio TAIP

Baby Audio TAIP

Warm up your sound.

Tape recordings have a musical quality that digital mixes often lack. TAIP brings that quality to your DAW.

It will add some authentic analog warmth to your tracks, without the need to route any audio out of the box.

Tape plugins are not a new concept. However, our emulation method is. Instead of using traditional DSP, we developed TAIP around an AI algorithm designed to decipher the invisible nuances of analog circuitry.

The result is a truly faithful tape emulation that is intuitive and creative in use - with a few additional features to accommodate a modern workflow. Use TAIP to add a touch of warmth and glue to your tracks, or "drive like you hate it" as an alternative to your distortion plug-ins.

Resources.

TAIP is our attempt to create the ideal 'Tape Machine' for the DAW era, combining an authentic vintage sound with a modern feature set. Its parameters allow you to customize the right tape type for any need.

◾DRIVE: Traditionally, tape machines were designed to color the sound as little as possible. TAIP is not. You can use the DRIVE button to add as much color as you need - from a subtle hint of warmth to heavy distortion.

◾MIX / TAPE FLANGING: MIX allows you to play your tape in parallel. You can combine MIX and WEAR for a classic "tape flanger" effect. This is caused by the wow and vibration of WEAR running parallel to the dry track.

◾MODEL: While SINGLE is a normal tape emulation, DUAL creates a series of two tape emulations chained under the hood, each applying half the DRIVE value. This will add a little more weight to your sign.

◾LO-SHAPE / HI-SHAPE: These sliders allow you to saturate the bass/treble more or less than the rest of the frequency spectrum. (Example: heating a drum bus without distorting low frequencies).

◾GLUE: Tape machines are known to have a compression-like effect due to their low dynamic range. TAIP lets you add this effect - or even exaggerate it. Use the glue for subtle cohesion or as a compressor.

◾NOISE: lets you add tape noise to your liking - or avoid it altogether.

◾ PRESENCE: Some of the tape's warmth comes from a dampened high end. PRESENCE lets you decide how much of this attenuation you want. It can bring back the shine that is sometimes lost on the tape.

◾WEAR: Combines wow, flutter and an altered frequency response curve to emulate a worn recorder.

◾ INPUT: Choose between NORMAL or WARM (more distorted) input levels without affecting the output volume.

◾ AUTO GAIN: Allows you to add more DRIVE while maintaining a consistent plug-in output level.

Placing the 'AI' in the TAIP.

'AI' is an overused term - and often misused. But we believe it's the future of music technology. It just needs to be used genuinely and for a legitimate purpose.

For a hardware emulation project like TAIP, AI offers an alternative - and in our opinion more faithful - approach to the traditional DSP method. Where a normal DSP emulation would entail 'guessing' the effect of various analog components and their mutual dependencies, we can use neural networks/AI to accurately decipher the sonic qualities that make a recorder sound and behave the way it does. This happens by feeding an algorithm a bunch of dry audio vs processed audio training data and teaching it to identify the exact characteristics that make the difference. Once these differences are learned by the AI, we can apply them to the new audio.

This process might sound overly digital for a plugin that sounds analog. But the reality is that "analog" and "digital" are two fundamentally different domains. To make a computer behave (or sound!) in a certain way, it's useful to think like it. To recreate an "analog-style" signal path in DSP is to think of the problem as a human being. The AI approach helps us solve the problem like a machine would - for more faithful emulation.
