Atsia Percussion
Atsia Bass Drums
This collection includes Dunumba, Kenkeni and Sangban (all from the Ewe tribe of Ghana), Gungon (from the Dagomba of northern Ghana) and Macana Surdo (from Brazil). All are double-headed cylinders, although they are constructed quite differently and create a variety of sounds. They are commonly used for basic rhythms. Up to 4 speed levels, with open and closed (muted) hits.
Atsia Bells
An essential component of African drum kits, these bells provide an important framework for rhythms. Instruments include Iron Castenet, Kenken and Toke, and all the important Gankoqui Bells. Gankogui is the foundation of the whole set. His voice provides the metronomic backdrop around which most Anlo-Ewe music is structured. 5 separate Gankoqui bells were included. Up to 4 speeds and open and muted hits provide a wide variety of tones.
Atsia Floor DrumsHand Hit
This drum set includes the Djembe (one of the most popular hand drums worldwide in circles, rituals and meetings), Apentema and three different Kpanlogo drums - conga drums covered with antelope skin. Both strong-handed and weak-handed moves were sampled. Open and muted hits and open and muted slaps up to four speeds offer a wide range of percussive sounds to work with.
Atsia Floor Drums Hand & Stick Hit
This drum kit is played with both hands and sticks and includes the Atsimevu, Boba and Sogo. The Atsimevu is the main drum and the most important performer of the Ewe ensemble. Atsimevu's role is to lead the rest of the group through a performance. The interpreter uses a variety of strokes to produce a rhythmic language that communicates with the rest of the ensemble. Sogo is the second most important drum in the set alongside Atsimevu and is the largest of the support drums. The Boba is a large barrel-shaped drum that produces a rumbling, thunderous bass sound for the ensemble. Up to 4 veloceties, with a wide variety of open and muted beats, slaps, stokes and double beats, provide ample percussive "vocabulary" with which to create your music.
Atsia Floor DrumsStick Hit
The solo drums in this set of instruments function in both primary and secondary roles. All are played with sticks. Instruments include: Kaganu, Kidi, Kloboto, Kpegisu and Totodzi. Kpegisu is one of West Africa's oldest living oral traditions and is profoundly expressive in its use of allegory and metaphor. Formerly a dance for those going to war, Kpegisu is now performed on special occasions. The Kpegisu drum is named after this dance. Both strong-handed and weak-handed moves were sampled. Open and muted hits plus the side stick are included, with up to four speeds.
Atsia frame drums
Gome and Tamalin are two unique frame drums from the Ashanti and Ga peoples of Ghana. Gome is like a small table with a rectangular or square leather top. When positioned sideways on the floor, the drummer sits on it, touching it with their hands and the heels of their feet, which press against the skin to change the tone. The Tamalin is square or rectangular and is held with one hand in the middle of the cross-shaped frame and hit with the other. A wedge tuning system and a goatskin head produce a constant high tone. Up to 4 speeds of center and edge hits, mutes and slaps.
Atsia Shakers and Snaps
Shakers add color and texture to a drum set. These shakers are from Ghana and Brazil and include Afoxe, 4 different Axatse, 2 different Caxixi, Frogs Eggs, Ganza, Maracas and Shekere. Finger snaps are also included. Multi-speed, single beats, double beats and beats.
