The 925 is MIA Laboratories' preferred main mix compressor.
It is designed using physical modeling principles, based on classic 'feed-back' topology in hardware circuit design.
The detection stage of sidechain is based on the basic analog envelope detector circuit.
Key design features include:
- Variable knee response, allowing more compression to be applied, esp. in high transient sounds such as percussion, samples, vocals etc.
- Logarithmic gain reduction, as the ear feel of the sound level is approximately logarithmic.
When used in extreme settings in long sustain sounds , may produce a distortion effect. This happens when, due to the high speed of the detector, it follows the actual waveform rather than the envelope of the program material. This is normal for such a project and in some cases desirable.
After much consideration, it was decided not to exclude the configuration range as the process is very program dependent. Instead, the user is given full control, as even if some settings are not suitable for a specific material, they are often perfect for a different situation.
This is often the case with vintage hardware and modern equipment, and it worked. in the wide range of compression characteristics of the 925s, esp. suitable for main mixing applications, but also bus mixing or multiple separate channels.
